Guide
Marketplace apps vs your own booking app.
What studios should know.
Fitness marketplaces promise discovery: new faces finding your classes inside a shared app. A branded system of your own promises ownership: your members, your data and your revenue. This guide explains the tradeoff so you can decide with clear eyes.
How class marketplaces work
A class marketplace is a shared consumer app. Members of the platform browse studios, gyms and activities across their city, buy credits or passes, and book a spot in your schedule alongside everyone else listed there. For the studio, the appeal is real: the platform brings an audience you did not have to win yourself, and empty spots in an off-peak class can find a taker.
The cost of that reach is structural, and it applies to the whole category regardless of which platform you look at. Bookings arrive through an app that is not yours. The customer relationship, the payment and the data sit with the platform. Your schedule is displayed next to your competitors, one swipe away. And the platform earns from every booking it passes to you, through commissions, revenue share or fees.
What owning your system changes
With a branded booking system, your members book on your website or your own iOS app, pay you directly with mada, Apple Pay or card, and receive confirmations from your WhatsApp number. Their history, packages and memberships live in your dashboard. When you launch a new class or raise a price, you are speaking to your own audience, and no platform sits between you and them.
Ownership also compounds. Every member you enroll this month is someone you can retain, upgrade to a membership, or win back with a WhatsApp message next season. On a marketplace, that same person remains the platform’s user first, one who may follow the next discount to a studio across the street.
Can you run both? Yes, deliberately
Plenty of successful venues use both. The sensible split: treat marketplaces as paid acquisition for spare capacity, and run everything that matters on your own system. First-time visitors may arrive through a shared app; regulars, packages, memberships and your busiest hours belong on your own rails, at full price, under your brand.
The mistake is running your core business on rented ground: selling memberships through an intermediary, letting a third party hold your member list, or training your best customers to book through an app that also advertises your competitors.
A checklist before you decide
Ask any platform you evaluate: Who owns the customer record and can I export it? What do I pay per booking, in commissions or fees? Do confirmations come from my brand or the platform’s? Can I sell my own memberships and packages at full price? Does my schedule appear next to competitors? Is Arabic a real first-class experience? Does it handle my compliance needs, such as ZATCA e-invoicing in Saudi Arabia?
Common questions
Do class marketplace apps charge studios commission?
Business models vary across the category, but marketplaces generally earn from the bookings they pass to venues through commissions, revenue share or fees, on top of any subscription. Ask for the full per-booking economics in writing before you list your schedule.
Should my pilates or yoga studio use a marketplace or its own booking app?
Run your core business, meaning members, packages and peak hours, on your own branded system, and treat marketplaces as an optional acquisition channel for spare capacity. Studios that sell memberships through an intermediary give up their most valuable asset: the direct member relationship.
Is Flow a marketplace?
No. Flow is your own branded system: your website, your iOS app, your WhatsApp number and your customer data. There is no shared consumer app, no commission on your own customers and no competitor listed next to your schedule.
Can I move my members from a marketplace to my own system?
Yes, if you hold their contact details. Flow imports customers and package balances from a spreadsheet, and WhatsApp confirmations from your own number give members an immediate reason to book directly. Venues typically shift their regulars within a few weeks.
